For Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn, all politics is personal.

Among Hahn’s successes is legislation that enhances enforcement of domestic violence orders of protection, issued by criminal and family courts, through a GPS monitoring pilot program.

For Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn, all politics is personal. Among Hahn’s successes is legislation that enhances enforcement of domestic violence orders of protection, issued by criminal and family courts, through a GPS monitoring pilot program.

Traditional GPS devices create exclusionary zones, said Hahn, who filed an order of protection 20 years ago. Under her new legislation, the GPS monitoring, or proximity detectors, will give victims peace of mind along with more freedom.

“The piece that really meant a lot to me was the proximity detectors,” Hahn said, referring to an accessory that alerts victims if their perpetrator comes into close contact. “You should be able to feel safe wherever you are.”

Other legislation that is close to home for Hahn is the “Toxin Free Toys Act,” introduced to the Legislature by Hahn this spring.

“I was surprised that in 2015, toys still contain toxic chemicals like arsenic, lead, cadmium,” Hahn said. “I was excited to enforce this legislation because I am a mom.”

Focusing on issues close to hear heart is gratifying, Hahn said. She has had success with bringing the anti-opiate drug Narcan to Suffolk County. Two of her daughter’s friends had brothers who overdosed on opiods, she added.

“The penalty for drug abuse is not death,” Hahn said. “The next step is approving treatment quality, approving treatment availability and prevention, prevention, prevention.”
